Quartzite is metamorphosed natural quartz sandstone and is found in association with other metamorphosed sedimentary rocks such as phyllite, schist and marble. When sandstone is subjected to heat and pressure, it turns into quartzite stone, which is an incredibly hard and dense material, a compact, granular rock composed of quartz crystals usually so firmly cemented as to make the mass homogeneous. The stone is generally quarried in stratified layers, the surfaces of which are unusually smooth. It's crushing and tensile strengths are extremely high and the color range is fairly wide. Like sandstone, their natural ability to split along foliations has made quartzite usable for wall cladding & roofing tiles. They are harder than sandstones.
