Marble inlay craft is one of the most beautiful and popular form of Indian art which is said to be introduced centuries ago by the Moghuls. The Taj Mahal is a classic example of beautiful marble inlay work. Since then exquisite marble inlay table tops and panels have been the outcome of the cultural heritage of Agra. The marble inlay table tops and panels of Agra are finely carved and embedded with semi precious stones. The art of creating inlay table tops and panels calls for skilled, dexterous craftsmanship combined with patience, hard work and a penchant for precision. The inlay table tops and panels work begins by careful planning of designs and setting the color patterns. In the base marble of the inlay table top/panel, floral, geometric, Persian, Victorian etc. designs and patterns are finely carved and the flowers and motifs are cut, shaped and finished in different colored stones. The base marble of the inlay table top/panel is then grooved and handcarved identical to each motif as per the selected pattern so that each motif fits perfectly in the groove. The cut motifs are then set in these grooves and polished and finished. Truly, inlay table tops and panels are works of artistic finesse.
