The Flaming Machine executes a thermal treatment, commonly called flaming, on the stones. The Flaming Machine hits the stone surface with a high- temperature (2500˚ C) flame, so it undergoes a thermal shock, giving the stone a characteristic roughness and chromatic effect. The Flaming Machine is used only on granites. The flaming machine has occasionally proven effective on other, non-siliceous materials also. It is advisable not to use the flaming machine on material less than 2.5 cm thick. The traditional Flaming Machine uses oxy-propane combustion, although in principle it could also include common gas (methane) if supplied at the adequate pressure. When high production levels are required the most common flaming machines have a fixed beam and moving slabs. Here the slabs advance on motorized rollers while the flaming hose of the flaming machine makes alternate movements at right angles to slab movement and flames their entire surfaces. Before and after the flaming the flaming machine has a system to clean the slab’s surfaces, either with jets of water or with rotating brushes. Given the high noise level of the flaming machines, they are generally housed in soundproofed cabins.
