Abrasives are used for the leveling, grinding, gauging, dressing, finishing and polishing of marble, granite, sandstone and other natural stones. Abrasives are made in various types, shapes, bonds and compositions to suit various applications. Depending upon the machine used for polishing, the type of Abrasive has to be selected. Also, different stone materials require different types of Abrasives. Manufacturers of Abrasives have carried out extensive research to use various mixes to produce a range of Abrasives to suit each different kind of material. Abrasives are produced in different grain gradings to be used in sequence. The final mirror polish is imparted by a special abrasive to be used at the end of the sequence. Basically, the Abrasives are with metallic bond or resin bond. For marble and softer stones, Abrasives are produced for use on rotating polishing heads that are 'fixed' and for granite the Abrasives used are suitable for use on rotating polishing heads that oscillate. Recent researches have come up with resin diamond abrasives.
